The importance of gut health

How’s your gut lately? Have you been giving your gut bacteria enough support to do its job?

The gut has a BIG job, by the way!

Did you know that 70-80% of immune cells are located in the gut? (SOURCE)

The bacteria that live in your gastrointestinal tract play several important roles like breaking down and digesting food, reducing inflammation, and boosting the immune system, to name a few.

So if you’ve been ignoring your gut’s health, it’s time to take action.

Today’s post is all about helping you improve your gut health with SYNBIOTICS.

Synbiotics to support a healthy body

Health experts recommend taking probiotics and prebiotics to improve gut health. This mixture is referred to as synbiotics (a synergy of probiotics and prebiotics).

While taking only one of them provides health benefits, your gut will most definitely benefit from taking both.

At Lifted Naturals, we have two different MOOD Probiotics formulas which are synbiotics.

But first, let’s talk about what probiotics and prebiotics are.

Probiotics: helpful gut bacteria

Probiotics are live microorganisms, bacteria, or yeast that live in the intestine or gut. They can also be found in the lungs, mouth, urinary tract, and vagina. Probiotic bacteria can cultured in labs to become food or supplements for human consumption. The most common probiotics that live in the human body are bifidobacterium and lactobacillus.

Probiotics are very important to the gut microbiome for several reasons. These are:

  • - Fight off harmful bacteria in the gut that can cause disease and infection
  • - Ensure proper digestion
  • - Support the intestine to absorb nutrients
  • - Boost the immune system

Prebiotics: The probiotic food source

Prebiotics are non-digestible plant fibers that serve as the food source for probiotics. They help the good gut bacteria grow and thrive.

Prebiotics are easily found in fruits and vegetables with complex carbohydrates like resistant starch and fiber.

Fructans (inulin and oligofructose) and galactooligosaccharides (GOS) are studied to be the most beneficial food for probiotics.

At Lifted Naturals, we use the prebiotic GOS in our formulas, due to the studies which showcase the benefits of mood support from this particular type.

Apart from being a probiotic food source, what are the other health benefits of prebiotics?

  • - Promote a healthy and thriving environment for gut bacteria
  • - Stimulate immune system
  • - Improve absorption of minerals like calcium and reduces the risk of allergies

How do synbiotics work together?

The human body cannot digest prebiotics.

Our bodies do not have enzymes that can break down these specialized plant fibers.

So let’s say you eat food with prebiotics like yam; those plant fibers just pass through the digestive system and go directly to the colon. This is where they meet your body’s probiotics.

In the colon, the probiotics are waiting. They are armed and more than prepared to break down the non-digestible plant fibers, and they do that without hesitation.

The probiotics are now more energized, ready to reproduce, and creating by-products that are healthy for the body, too.

The concept behind synbiotics is that to allow the body’s good bacteria (probiotics) to work at their best capacity, there has to be something that supports them and that’s the main role of prebiotics.

Not only do they give probiotics energy, but they help with the survivability of the good bacteria in your gut as well as achieve a balanced gut microbiome.

All these have direct benefits to the body’s digestive system, metabolism, and immune system.

Food? Supplements? Or both?

Synbiotics can be consumed by eating specific foods or through supplements.

Some people do not have daily access to probiotics and prebiotics sources so taking a dietary supplements is their best option.

The probiotic foods that you should look for include kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, yogurt, fermented cheese, fermented buttermilk, and kombucha. Meanwhile, you can get prebiotics from high-fiber foods like bananas, peas, oats, legumes, berries, peas, asparagus, garlic, whole grains, and many more.

At Lifted Naturals, we are committed to creating high-quality probiotics for gut health AND overall mood support.

We have two MOOD Probiotic formulas that are SYNBIOTICS, meaning they include both probiotics AND prebiotics.

Giving our gut what it needs

Our gut bacteria are the silent heroes in our body that work around the clock to make sure our digestive system, metabolism, and immune system are working at optimum levels.

However, they can’t always do it alone. They need support to grow and thrive. And, because our modern world has depleted soil, and contaminated air and water, we need to do our part in making sure our gut is healthy as can be.

Changing our diet or adding to it is one great way.

But we are often in need of an extra boost, which is what our synbiotics offer!
