If you’re histamine sensitive, choosing a probiotic can sometimes feel like a coin flip.
You read the label.
It sounds gentle.
It says "30 billion CFU" in big, friendly numbers.
So you give it a try.
And then a few days later...
You’re flushed. Foggy. Bloated. Or maybe you just feel off again.
I’ve been there.
And it is exhausting.
So this isn’t going to be another "top 10 probiotics" list.
Instead, I want to give you the checklist I wish someone had handed me years ago.
What actually makes a probiotic low histamine?
What should you look for on the back of the bottle?
And what about the prebiotic inside some probiotic formulas?
That last question is one almost nobody addresses very honestly.
Including us, until now.
So let’s get into it.

First: what does "low histamine" actually mean?
Legally?
Not much.
There’s no official standard or certification for a "low histamine" probiotic.
A brand can put those words on the front of a bottle without meeting any particular definition at all.
So instead of trusting the words on the front, it helps to understand what you’re actually looking for.
There are really three separate things people may mean when they say a probiotic is "low histamine."
1. The probiotic doesn’t contain histamine.
That’s almost always true.
And it’s almost never the actual issue.
A probiotic capsule isn’t the same thing as a fermented food.
2. The probiotic strains don’t produce histamine.
THIS is the one that matters.
Some bacteria carry an enzyme called histidine decarboxylase.
That enzyme can convert the amino acid histidine into histamine — right there in your gut.
3. The rest of the formula doesn’t set you off.
This one gets overlooked all the time.
Prebiotics.
Fillers.
Binders.
Even the capsule material.
Those things can matter too.
So a genuinely histamine-friendly probiotic really needs to clear all three hurdles.
Most "low histamine" marketing only talks about the first.
The strains to look out for
The clearest one is Lactobacillus reuteri.
Its histamine-producing machinery has actually been mapped in detail, right down to the gene cluster.
A few other organisms come up repeatedly too, mostly because they’re commonly used in dairy fermentation:
- Lactobacillus casei
- Lactobacillus bulgaricus
- Lactobacillus delbrueckii
- Streptococcus thermophilus
Those last two are part of what makes yogurt... well, yogurt.
So if fermented dairy has never sat particularly well with you, that may be part of the story.
And it’s worth checking whether those same organisms have quietly made their way into your probiotic.
Then we have the more complicated ones.
L. brevis.
L. helveticus.
Bacillus coagulans.
With these, the species name alone genuinely can’t answer the question because histamine production may depend on the specific strain.

If you want the deeper science instead of the quick summary, that’s the place to start.
The strains that are usually a safer bet
Most Bifidobacterium species — including bifidum, breve, infantis, longum, and animalis — aren’t known to carry the histamine gene cluster.
That’s one of the main reasons Bifidobacteria show up again and again in histamine-friendly probiotic recommendations.
Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG is also widely considered well tolerated.
And it’s one of the most-studied probiotic strains out there.
But here’s one distinction I think is really important:
"Doesn’t produce histamine" is NOT the same thing as "actively lowers histamine."
You’ll see that second claim made pretty confidently online.
But the evidence in humans is much thinner than some of those claims make it sound.
And we’d rather tell you that than pretend the research says something it doesn’t.
The prebiotic question nobody answers
Okay.
Here’s the one that took us a while to figure out how to talk about.
A lot of histamine-intolerance guidance says to avoid prebiotics.
FOS.
Inulin.
GOS.
All of them.
And a lot of probiotics contain a prebiotic.
Ours included.
So rather than dancing around that, let’s talk about it directly.
Why we use GOS
We chose GOS because it’s the best-studied prebiotic for mood and the gut-brain connection.
And that’s not just a marketing line.
There’s actually a pretty fascinating head-to-head study behind it.
In a randomized trial, 45 healthy volunteers took either GOS, FOS, or a placebo for three weeks.
The GOS group showed a significantly reduced cortisol awakening response and less attentional bias toward negative information.
The FOS group showed nothing (Schmidt et al., Psychopharmacology 2015).
A later study found similar calming effects from GOS in healthy young women (Johnstone et al., Scientific Reports 2021).
There was another reason we liked GOS too.
When you pair a probiotic with a prebiotic, you get what’s called a synbiotic.
Basically, the prebiotic helps feed the good bacteria so the probiotics can do their job better.
And because we were already building mood probiotic formulas around the gut-brain connection, pairing those bacteria with the prebiotic that had this particular mood research behind it just made sense to us.
Give the good bacteria a little extra support.
All in one capsule.
But is GOS a problem if you’re histamine sensitive?
Here’s where we need to separate two different things.
It isn’t a histamine problem.
GOS doesn’t contain histamine.
And GOS doesn’t make histamine.
The bacteria it feeds in our histamine-friendly formula don’t produce histamine either.
But...
It can be a tolerance problem.
GOS is a FODMAP.
Your gut bacteria ferment it.
And fermentation produces gas.
So if you’re FODMAP-sensitive, GOS may mean bloating or cramping.
That’s genuinely uncomfortable.
But it isn’t the same thing as a histamine reaction.
There’s also research in mice connecting high-FODMAP intake with mast cell activation (Singh et al., 2021).
Notice the important word there:
Mice.
That isn’t a human finding, and we’re not going to turn it into one.
But it is part of the reason some cautious sources recommend skipping prebiotics initially.
There’s one more detail that’s really worth knowing.
"GOS" can describe two different kinds of molecules.
The α-linked kind found in legumes are the classic FODMAP troublemakers.
The β-linked, lactose-derived prebiotic GOS used in the studies above is a different compound.
Some of the conflicting advice you’ll find online comes from treating those two things as if they’re exactly the same.
So where does all of this leave you?
If you’re histamine sensitive but generally do fine with fiber, GOS is likely to be a benefit rather than a risk.
But if you’re histamine sensitive and you know you react to FODMAPs?
Skip the prebiotic entirely.
You don’t need it.
And you shouldn’t have to gamble with feeling crummy just to find out.
That’s exactly why we make one of each.
What else to check on the label
Full strain designations.
Look for the part that comes after the species name.
For example, the "GG" in L. rhamnosus GG.
If the label just says something like "Lactobacillus blend," you don’t have enough information to really assess what’s in there.
Some brands like ours will share the strains on our website or via email-- but do not have room to post all strains on the label.
The other ingredients.
Check the fillers.
The flow agents.
The capsule material.
If you’re sensitive enough to be reading an article like this, those little details may matter to you too.
Total CFU, in context.
More isn’t automatically better.
Especially if you tend to be reactive.
Sometimes a bigger number just means a bigger first step for your gut.
Whether you can reach a human.
This one may not technically be part of the formula.
But I think it matters.
If you have a question about a product and nobody will answer you...
That tells you something about what happens if that product doesn’t suit you.

Because it would feel pretty strange to write a whole article explaining why strain designations matter...
And then not show you ours.
However you start, start low
Whichever probiotic you choose — ours or somebody else’s — one of the most useful things you can do is start with a fraction of the full dose.
Maybe a quarter of a capsule.
Or even an eighth.
You can open the capsule and stir the contents into something cool rather than hot.
Then stay there for several days before increasing.
Think weeks to reach a full dose, not days.
If something shows up, try stepping the dose back down instead of immediately stopping altogether.
Then build up more slowly.
If the same thing happens again at the same low dose?
That’s a clue that the issue may be the product itself rather than how quickly you started it.

Some are.
Some aren’t.
It depends entirely on the strains being used.
Products built around Bifidobacterium species are generally a safer starting point.

How long before I know if a probiotic suits me?
A poor match often makes itself known within days.
Figuring out whether a well-tolerated probiotic is actually helping takes longer — usually several weeks.
Do I need a refrigerated probiotic?
Not necessarily.
Shelf stability depends on the particular strains and how the product is manufactured.
What’s more important is whether the potency is guaranteed through the expiration date — rather than only guaranteed at the time the product was manufactured.
